Belize, a small tropical country is located on the southeastern
portion of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately 250 miles south
of Cancun. Bordered to the North by Mexico, to the west and south
by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean sea. Belizean culture
is a blend of different elements mixing in with its own traditions
to form a uniquely colorful and friendly society. Although English
is the official language, Spanish and Caribe are widely spoken
in this land, with its subtropical climate cooled by the prevailing
trade winds blowing off the Caribbean Sea.
Belize is an exciting holiday destination for nature lovers and
archeology buffs. Its virgin jungle holds the world's only jaguar
preserve and is home to more than 500 species of birds, many of
whom are exclusive to Belize. Within its 9,000 square mile area,
Belize has more than 600 known sites of ancient civilizations,
many of which are easily accessible. The most dramatic of these
being Lamanai, which is located on the banks of the new River
lagoon and reached by a river boat ride. Among the other sites
of interest are Cerros, Santa Rita, Nohmul and Cuello. Belizean
waters boast some of the best fishing ground found anywhere: miles
of coastal lagoons and rivers bound with snook, tarpon and cubera.
